Age brings changes to the eyes much as with other facial features. For instance, fatty pouches and loose skin can develop. And some people may develop a drooping of the lower eyelid as a result of aging. Some of these changes may occur as early as in your late thirties.
In some cases, excess skin of the upper eyelids may become such a problem that it can impair your vision. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is designed to eliminate excessive skin and protruding bags in your upper and lower eyelids. This is one of the surgical procedures performed here at Boyd Cosmetic Surgical Institute.
In a blepharoplasty, incisions are placed in a skin crease of the upper lid and just below the eyelashes of the lower lid. After the “bags” under your eyes are removed and skin is trimmed, the wound is meticulously repaired. Sometimes, the fatty pouches of the lower eyelid are removed through an incision inside the eyelid so no scar is visible This is called the “transconjunctival” approach to eyelid surgery.
Blepharoplasty will generally be performed under local anesthesia an outpatient surgical facility. After outpatient surgery, you should expect to have some swelling and bruising of your eyelids. Dr. Boyd often uses stitches that dissolve on their own. For those times when permanent stitches are used, they will be removed between 3-5 days.
Camouflage make-up or “concealer” can be used on the eyelids 24 hours following surgery, allowing you to feel confident about returning to work and your daily activities as soon as possible. After a week of non-stressful activities, you typically can go back to a normal routine.
